Sheeran’s love for his grandmother is well known, having written his hit song Nancy Mulligan about her love story with Sheeran’s granddad William Sheeran.
Sheeran’s father John delivered the eulogy at the funeral, Daily Mail reported.
“I am very sad that our son Edward is unable to be here today. He’s so upset that he cannot be present – he has to be thousands of miles away in a court in America defending his integrity,” John said in his eulogy, according to the publication.
“I know he is comforted by the fact that he was able to spend some precious time alone with his grandma just a month ago.”
The court case in which Sheeran is involved relates to alleged copyright infringement of his hit song, Thinking Out Loud.
Sheeran is defending arguments that the song is too similar to Marvin Gaye’s Get It On.
Missing the funeral perhaps shows how serious Sheeran is about fighting for his song.
Nancy Mulligan remains one of his most personal songs, detailing his grandparents’ love story from his grandfather’s perspective.
Some of the lyrics about Mulligan and Sheeran included: “I was twenty-four years old when I met the woman I would call my own.
“Twenty-two grandkids now growing old in that house that your brother bought you.”
“She was Nancy Mulligan and I was William Sheeran,” the chorus says.
“She took my name and then we were one, down by the Wexford border.”
The loss of Sheeran’s grandmother comes after he shared more about his private life in his new Disney+ documentary The Sum of It All.
Sheeran revealed a different side of himself, even breaking down over his wife’s cancer diagnosis.
The Shape of You singer’s wife, Cherry Seaborn, was diagnosed with a malignant tumour when she was pregnant with the couple’s second child, and could not start treatment until after the birth.
In the third episode, he and his wife recalled the shocking news.
“I got diagnosed with cancer at the start of the year which was a massive s******,” Seaborn said.
“It made me massively reflect on our mortality. It made me think, ‘Oh if I died, what’s people’s perception of me? What do you leave behind?’
